Industry Forum - Our Keynote Speakers
Marie Hayden
Marie Hayden is Managing Director of Grid Enhancing Technologies Ltd.

Her 30-year energy industry experience includes leadership roles with EirGrid, Smart Wires, and MetOx International.

At Smart Wires Marie led Business Development activities in Europe and Australia, before joining the executive team as Chief Engineer. In 2023 Marie set up Grid Enhancing Technologies and joined the MetOx International team advising on Global Business Development.

Marie has a Master’s degree in engineering management from UCD and is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers of Ireland.


















Martin Ansell
Martin is a seasoned international executive who has worked in the Energy industry for over 35 years. His experience spans from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies where he has guided the successful delivery of M&A activity, complex projects and innovation programmes.

At ALSTOM T&D, Martin was responsible for the business development of its T&D Protection and Automation activity and then went on to lead its UK activities in HVDC/Power Electronics, HV Switchgear and Substation Projects.  

At GE Energy, he served as a member of its global T&D executive driving growth in the EMEA region and then, as an Executive of GE's Smart Grid leadership team, was responsible for the strategy and success of its global Asset Management & Optimisation software business.  

Today, Martin advises clients in the Power Systems industry, is a member of CIGRE UK’s Steering Committee and holds a number of Non-Executive Board roles.  Martin has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, has professional membership of the IET and the IEEE and is a Distinguished Member of CIGRE.




Professor Xiao-Ping Zhang
Xiao-Ping Zhang is a Professor of Electrical Power Systems, Director of Smart Grid, Birmingham Energy Institute, and Co-Director of Birmingham Energy Storage Centre sponsored by the UK EPSRC, and Head of the Electrical Power & Control Systems Group

Xiao-Ping has published over 130+ research papers in scientific journals, 160+ conference proceedings / presentations as well as reviews, 5 books and 2 book chapters.

In 2010, he initiated the UK-China Smart Grid Workshop series, which has led to 13 UK-China joint research projects on smart grid, electric vehicles and energy storage. In June 2011, he proposed the concept of “Global Power & Energy Internet” in the CIGRE Workshop held at the University of Birmingham. He pioneered the concept of “Energy Union”, which has been adopted by European Commission.

He also pioneered the vision and concept of Midlands as the UK’s “Energy Valley” where this became true with the establishment of UK’s Energy Research Accelerator and UK’s Energy Systems Catapult in the region. He has been appointed to the Expert Advisory Group of BEIS Offshore Transmission Network Review since 2020,  which helps shape the UK national strategy for Offshore Transmission Network Review in response to PM’s 10-point Green Recovery Plan.
Mark Bygraves
Mark brings over 30 years’ experience in the energy sector in a career as Lawyer, Director of M&A, Investment Banker, Commercial Director and CEO.   

Previously, he was Chief Executive of Elexon, the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) company responsible for managing and operating the rules of the electricity wholesale market in Great Britain.   

Amongst his current roles, he is a director of Sitigrid (www.sitigrid.com), a start-up establishing local electricity markets for P2P matching of generators to customers, creating enhanced value for both.

The Glasshouse is at Alderley Park, Cheshire

If travelling by car you can park in the Glasshouse car park. Parking is free for 2 hours, then £1 per hour up to a maximum of £5.

If you are travelling by train the closest station is Alderley Edge Park a short 7 minute taxi ride to the Glasshouse.

When you arrive at the Glasshouse, one of the Bruntwood hosts will meet you, direct you to the event registration.
